What are Unit Labor Costs?

This is an index derived by the Department of Labor based on the ratio of the compensation per hour (nonfarm) index and the output per hour index (nonfarm). Unit labor costs provide an indication of how productivity gains can offset an increase in wages or how an increase in wages offset gains in productivity.
